“Research use only” means a product is supplied as laboratory reference material, not as a medicine, food supplement or cosmetic, and is not intended for human or veterinary use.
In the UK, whether something counts as a medicine is decided under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012 by how it is presented and what it does, so a research label only holds meaning when everything about the product supports it.
Research peptides are sold in the UK under a “research use only” framing. Buyers often ask what that label actually means, who regulates it and what it requires of them. This guide sets out the general position in plain terms.
Scope: this article is general information about the UK regulatory landscape, not legal advice. It makes no claim about any effect of any compound.
What “research use only” describes
A research use only product is supplied as reference material for laboratory work, such as analytical method development, in vitro assays or other bench research. It has not been through a medicines licensing process, and it is not presented as treating, preventing or diagnosing anything.
Research use only
Material supplied for laboratory work. Not for human or veterinary use, and not presented with any health purpose.
Medicinal product
A product presented as treating or preventing disease, or used to restore, correct or modify physiological functions.
Licensed medicine
A medicinal product that holds a UK marketing authorisation following assessment of quality, safety and efficacy.
Who regulates this in the UK
The main legislation is the Human Medicines Regulations 2012. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) applies it and decides, subject to review by the courts, whether a particular product is a medicinal product.
The MHRA looks at the whole picture: claims, wording, images, packaging, the website and how a product is promoted. A label alone does not decide the outcome, which is why responsible suppliers avoid any health or outcome claims anywhere they sell.
What this means for a responsible supplier
- No claims that a compound treats, prevents or improves any condition
- No dosing, administration or human use guidance of any kind
- Clear research use only statements on product pages and packaging
- Sales restricted to adults, with an age and research use confirmation
- Batch specific certificates of analysis that buyers can check
What it means for a buyer
When you buy research use only material, you confirm that it will be used for laboratory research. In practice that means:
- Use it in a laboratory setting by appropriately trained people.
- Do not administer it to people or animals.
- Keep records that link each vial to its batch and certificate.
- Follow your institution’s procedures for storage, handling and disposal.
Anti-doping and sport
Many research peptides have no approval for human therapeutic use. The World Anti-Doping Agency Prohibited List covers non-approved substances in its S0 category, which applies at all times. UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) administers the anti-doping rules in the UK, and athletes are responsible for any substance found in their samples.
How Master Biolabs approaches compliance

Our site carries no health or outcome claims, sale is restricted to buyers aged 18 or over who confirm research use, and every batch is published with an independent certificate of analysis. Our full position is set out in our Research Use Policy and Terms of Sale.
- Research use only means laboratory reference material, not a medicine
- The Human Medicines Regulations 2012 are the governing UK law
- The MHRA decides what counts as a medicinal product
- Presentation counts, so a research label must be backed by everything else
- Non-approved substances fall under WADA category S0 in sport
- Buyers confirm laboratory use and must not administer the material
